Second Harvest North Florida

In Washington, the House of Representatives voted today 218 to 199 to approve a deficit reduction measure that includes a drastic $36 billion cut to SNAP. This is the same cut that was approved by the House Budget Committee on Monday, May 7, and by the House Agriculture Committee on April 18. The complete deficit reduction package would generate savings largely from deep cuts to programs that assist low-income families.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On Wednesday, April 25, nearly 300 CSX employees gathered at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena to participate in the first Second Harvest volunteer experience “On The Go.” The result was a high-intensity three-workout that produced enough ready-to-deliver food items for more than 86,000 meals.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - One of the greatest challenges in the fight against hunger in the United States today is a food system that supplies nutritious foods into our communities – but not equally into every neighborhood. Food deserts – or areas where grocery stores don’t exist or aren’t accessible to the residents who live there – are too common, even in Jacksonville, Fla. The problem affects thousands of households.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- The 11th annual design/build event Canstruction® is relocating to the Jacksonville International Airport for three high-volume weeks, including The PLAYERS Championship. 

“We are excited about this new partnership with the Jacksonville International Airport and the way it will allow us to educate travelers about the growing issue of domestic hunger,” Second Harvest Executive Director Bruce Ganger said.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - On Saturday, April 21, the Duval County Food Policy Council will host the inaugural Duval County Food Policy Summit at the Schultz Center for Teaching and Leadership. The summit will bring key players within the food system together for a public conversation. The goal of the summit is to identify solutions that can improve the quality and accessibility of healthy food for people living in Duval County.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Despite signs of economic recovery, record numbers of families in North Florida and across America are currently relying on food assistance.  In fact, one in eight Americans will receive help in 2012 from food banks.  And among the most needed items are sources of high quality protein.

We’re excited to announce that all the chefs who competed last year have signed on once again to battle it out in 2012. Team City consists of Tom Gray from Bistro Aix, Matthew Medure from Matthew’s, Dennis Chan from Blue Bamboo and Scott Ostrander from ‘Town. Team Beaches is made up of Ted Peters from Azurea, David Medure from Restaurant Medure, Danny Groshell from Ocean 60, and William Murphy from TPC Sawgrass.

This is a ticketed event. Food tickets purchased separately from admission price. Food tickets can be purchased the day of the event for $1 each or 20 tickets for $18. If you can't make the VIP Happy Hour benefiting Second Harvest North Florida, canned food donations will be accepted and delivered directly to Second Harvest. The mission of Second Harvest North Florida is to distribute food and grocery products to hungry people and to educate the public about the causes and possible solutions to problems of domestic hunger.
