The results are in from the Be A Hero Toy & Food Drive held in conjunction with First Coast News on Dec. 4 and 5, and the big winners are families in need throughout north Florida.

More than 22,000 pounds of food and 4,000 individual toys were collected during the two-day event at Orange Park Mall, St. Johns Town Center Mall and various Watson Realty offices. The food collected will generate nearly 18,000 meals for people in need, while the toys will reach low-income children throughout the First Coast and help bring joy during the holiday season.
The event was a collaborative effort between Second Harvest, First Coast News, United Way of Northeast Florida, Watson Realty, Simon Malls, Suddath Moving Systems and the Florida Times-Union. More than 50 volunteers donated their time and energy to help make the Be A Hero weekend a success.
“This was a wonderful event that once again demonstrates the giving spirit of our community and how it responds in times of need,” Second Harvest Executive Director Thomas Mantz said. “Many of our neighbors are hurting right now, and the food and toys that were collected will help make their holiday season a little more enjoyable.”
All of the collected toys have been distributed to agencies who serve children, Mantz said, and the food resources are moving rapidly.
Second Harvest is able to generate six meals for every $1 donated. For more information on how to donate or volunteer, visit www.WeNourishHope.org.
