JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Second Harvest North Florida teamed with WJXT on Thursday, June 14, to raise nearly 11,000 pounds of food for neighbors in need through the station’s annual Shredder Day event.

ImageViewers were encouraged to bring nonperishable food items during the day-long shredder event, along with any personal items that they wished to have shredded, courtesy of Republic Services Recycling. Free shredding was offered for items such as bank statements, canceled checks, medical records and other paperwork containing personal information to help prevent identity theft.

The event ran from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and resulted in more than 3,300 vehicles dropping off items to be destroyed. The food collected, along with several hundred dollars in cash, resulted in more than 10,000 meals being created.

Volunteers from the 125th Fighter Wing of the Florida Air National Guard assisted, along with staff from Republic Services, WJXT and Second Harvest.
