RESPONSE: Second Harvest North Florida strongly opposes House cuts to SNAP program

In Washington, the House of Representatives voted today 218 to 199 to approve a deficit reduction measure that includes a drastic $36 billion cut to SNAP. This is the same cut that was approved by the House Budget Committee on Monday, May 7, and by the House Agriculture Committee on April 18. The complete deficit reduction package would generate savings largely from deep cuts to programs that assist low-income families.

2012 Nourishing Kids Summer Meals Program with Chick-fil-A at Roosevelt Square

Second Harvest and Chick-fil-A at Roosevelt Square will provide a boxed meal to a child for each $5 voucher sold. Each meal consists of an original Chick-fil-A® Chicken Sandwich, bag of potato chips and a brownie. Once enough vouchers have been sold to serve all of the children participating in a summer program, the Chick-fil-A® Cow and/or Kid Cow will deliver the lunches and host a fun Chick-fil-A® Day for the children.

 

Second Harvest North Florida has helped feed hungry children in north Florida for the past 33 years. Chick-fil-A® at Roosevelt Square is partnering for the sixth consecutive year with Second Harvest to provide delicious lunches for summer programs serving children in low-income neighborhoods.

20th Annual "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive

The National Association of Letter Carriers sponsors the largest one-day food drive in the United States on Mother's Day weekend each year. This year's event will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2012.

The 20th Annual "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive, the largest one-day food drive in the United States, is set for Saturday, May 12, 2012. Residents are asked to leave nonperishable food donations in bags or boxes by their mailboxes.

More than 250,000 pounds of food was donated to Second Harvest North Florida through the NALC event in 2011, and the goal is to secure more than 300,000 pounds in 2012.

Each year volunteers representing the local restaurant community host an event called "The Jacksonville FOODFIGHT" that features 50 of Jacksonville's finest restaurants and beverage wholesalers/distributors who come together in friendly competition to "take a bite out of hunger" by raising funds and awareness for Second Harvest North Florida.

The 11th annual design/build event Canstruction® is relocating to the Jacksonville International Airport for three high-volume weeks, from April 27-May 18.

 

 

Competing architectural firms will build their structures in the airport’s newly designed Connector Bridge April 27, 2012.  Each design will consist of non-perishable food items, which will be donated to Second Harvest. The structures will remain on display through May 18. Passersby have the opportunity to vote for “People’s Choice” award via online voting, with a panel of local judges also awarding honors for best meal, best use of labels, structural ingenuity and juror’s favorite.

The Blood Alliance converts donations into meals for hungry north Florida families
